How to ‘wear’ Christmas part 3.

In which I channel the Christmas Tree Angel… via tulle and satin.

I think it’s worth saying at this point that all these Christmas looks can be dressed up or down. Satin slipdresses/skirts and camisoles are having a moment - and have been for some time - but can be off-putting to wear for a day thing or day to night do if you feel you just have to wear that, feeling naked and cold with winter grey skin. But you don’t.

Things to consider:

Satin - dresses, jackets, skirts, trousers - looks great with t-shirts and jumpers, or with denim, or a totally different texture, like tweed. I believe that satin jackets are the dog’s bollocks and satin is equally awesome in a suit. Once again, be careful with the colours and err on the darker end of red and green. I have a silver satin blazer I’ve had for at least twenty years and I pull it out each summer to many compliments. Find a good one and it will last you. Mine was from Reiss.

Tulle is also surprisingly versatile in dressing up and down. I’ve seen a lot of people team cashmere or mohair jumpers with maxi tulle skirts in a similar tone which looks pretty marvellous. I would probably avoid mixing with sequins especially if they are different colours, to make the Christmas bauble analogy again.  And cream tulle by a Christmas tree is pretty fairy/angel. See below, but it is Christmas right..?

This is a ‘Needle and Thread’ dress I’ve had a while. It needs toughening up when worn out for fear of being too princessy. So I wear with big boots (see cover shot) and a black jacket of some description.

For Gents, again stick with jackets. A full suit can be a bit too much. Interestingly not a lot of satin blazers to be found – either BooHoo Man or Moschino so quite the spectrum. Satin bomber jackets are way cooler and more casual to wear with t-shirts or shirts instead of a blazer. I would suggest wearing in the midnight blue, dark bottle green or wine red colours. Regarding shirts, I fear satin shirts are more than a tad sweaty. And, as much as I don’t like rules, I think we should probably leave tulle shirts to Harry Styles.

On that winsome note, I hope you all have a wonderful, comfortable and stylish Christmas and an awesome New Years Eve of (inevitable) shininess and glitter.
