‘Style Fearlessness’ and what I mean by that
I talk about this a lot so I thought I would explain a few guiding principles; with some obligatory caveats.
I’m aware the word ‘fearless’ might put some people off, which is fine, not everyone likes the same thing do they? In this context I think it’s a mixture of confidence (over-used word) with some energy, a helping of innate curiousity and a hefty dose of ‘fuck it’. If there was to be a management summary it would be Giving Unexpected Combinations A Go. If you have a limited attention span, read no further. I feel your pain.
So then, taking Unexpected Combinations as the brief, you can experiment away. EMBRACE THE CLASH. And by that I mean textures, colours and shapes.
TEXTURE: I love teaming tweed and sequins for example, or heavy wool and shiny things or a delicate dress and great big boots.
COLOUR: A clash of brights can be awesome, or navy and blue or silver AND gold. I think be careful of brown and purple, especially together as that can particularly look a bit sludgey. And anything that makes you feel a little bilious is probably a sign it’s not working. For you or anyone.
SHAPE: You can have lots of fun here. Big and baggy on bottom can mean tiny and tight on top or baggy on top too but not bulky if you see what I mean. Consider the fabrics. Experiment with lengths.
So that’s point one. It’s quite a major one. The others won’t take so much writing.
Style Fearlessness means overcoming the “I shouldn’t wear this”. If you want to, feel it suits you but are unsure of the appropriacy of the context then evaluate. Will it make YOU feel good? Is it just seemingly inappropriate because you haven’t done it before? I’m pretty sure the local pub would be able to cope with some sequins and clash. Parents evening in something more suitable for the boudoir (if you have one), probably less so. But, if it’s you being brave and it brings you joy, then everyone else will just have to get in line.
Which is another point. Clothes are joyful. They can change a mood, brighten up dullness, they are an awesome expression of you. I talk about clothes bringing joy and it’s true I tell you. Especially the lovely ones. so DON’T SAVE THEM FOR BEST. Especially at the moment as we are not going anywhere and it’s not a waste to wear them to the supermarket. It’s not going to degrade them in some way and it will definitely cheer you up. For. Sure.
Caveat-time. Your clothes have to fit otherwise they will not bring you joy. So if they are too small that will be uncomfortable, too big (different to over-sized) then any look will probably be shrouded. Likewise if they are patently the wrong shape for your body. You will know it. It’s a different thing to trying something new.
And last, this does take an element of trial and error. I’m not advocating throwing everything on and going “Rah, fearlessness!” Although that does have a certain charm to it.
